Voted to Disallow Republican Amendments on House Rules
On January 23rd, just nine days after becoming Speaker, Team Burrows issued the new House Rules package - but did so at 4:00 AM.
When members got into the capitol that day, they found over two hundred pages waiting for them to review.
At 2:00 PM, the House was called to order.
Rep. Tony Tinderholt made an inquiry about moving the rules vote until 4 days later to give the members time to review the changes and ready their amendments to the package.
That was ignored and Rep. Jared Patterson moved to call the question and vote immediately.
The Patterson motion was seconded by Republicans and Democrats who voted for Burrows to become Speaker. The vote was taken, and the rules were adopted.
A little over an hour later, at 3:37 PM, less than twelve hours after the rules package was first given to members at 4:00 AM, the Democrats were ready to have a press conference about it all.
No amendments allowed. The Democrats were just fine with it all. Why might that be? Because the House Parliamentarian, Hugh Brady, helped write the rules. His initials were on the document.
Who is Brady? An former Obama appointee. Just as the US Senate, we've learned, has a Democrat parliamentarian who thwarts the Republican agenda.
Does any of this sound very Republican or representative?
Here's the vote that enabled Patterson and Burrows and the Democrats to stop any amendments on the rules.
